John Deere 444H Troubleshooting and Repair Manual
John Deere Operation and Test Manual- TM1604
In this manual you will find the information you need to Troubleshooting and Repair:
- Diagnostics: Identifying failures in the variable-displacement axial piston hydraulic pumps or the computer-controlled countershaft-type power shift transmissions.
- Component Overhaul: Step-by-step procedures for dismantling and reassembling engines (4.5T for 444H, 6.8T for 544H) and heavy-duty planetary final drives.
- Maintenance Specs: Finding precise torque values, fuel/lubricant capacities, and wiring diagrams for the 24V electrical system.

How to Troubleshoot 544H Hydraulics
- Fluid Level & Quality: Check the hydraulic reservoir sight glass. Low oil can cause cavitation (loud whining/knocking) or total loss of lift. If oil is milky, it’s contaminated with water; if foamy, air is entering the system.
External Leaks: Inspect hoses and cylinders. Use a piece of cardboard, never your hands, to check for high-pressure pinhole leaks to avoid serious injury.
Filters: Clogged filters are a primary cause of slow bucket movement. Check the service monitor for hydraulic filter restriction alerts.
Mechanical Bindings: Ensure the bucket/attachment pins are greased. A “stiff” loader can sometimes be a dry pivot point rather than a hydraulic failure.
